Independent Living for Seniors in Mesa, Arizona

What is senior independent living?

Independent Living is for seniors age 62+ who want more freedom for enjoying like-to-do rather than have-to-do activities like housework, yard work or cooking. Think of someone, maybe yourself, who’d like to spend golden years enjoying activities -- like themed dinner parties, arts and crafts, games or theater outings -- with people of similar age. You or they appreciate educational learning and fitness opportunities to help maintain independence. Plus the convenience of transportation services and on-site medical care, if needed. Independent Living at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa helps residents be prepared for changes in health conditions and the need for additional support.

Is independent living at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa right for me?

There are many reasons that our senior residents choose Fellowship Square Historic Mesa as their home. Among the top reasons are affordability, our non-profit structure and our friendly and compassionate Christian culture.

Another reason is our location. We are just north of downtown Historic Mesa, which boasts a popular variety of enticing restaurants, the Mesa Arts Center, library, post office and Senior Center.

We are also a mecca for baseball enthusiasts. Mesa hosts spring training games for the Oakland A’s at Hohokam Stadium (easy walking distance) and the Chicago Cubs at nearby Sloan Park.

Some choose us because of our ability to meet the needs of our senior residents during times of change. We offer multiple levels of care including independent living, assisted living and memory care. In addition, we offer supportive services (caregiver support) to help our residents enjoy independent living as long as possible. Family members often appreciate the help and advice we offer in identifying resources and securing needed assistance as their loved one is going through these changes.

Beautiful senior living campus in Historic Mesa

Another reason you might choose to live at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa is our lushly landscaped grounds with private entrances that open to the outdoors, and roomy patios or balconies. Residents enjoy our beautiful roses, a vegetable garden maintained by our garden club and multiple shaded seating areas for chats with neighbors. Our year-round green grass is a refreshing and unusual oasis amid the desert we call home.

Independent living amenities and services at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa

Housekeeping

One of the nicest things about living at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa is the housekeeping service. Every other week, enjoy a complimentary cleaning of your apartment. Check out our Housekeeping Services flyer that describes the many things that our staff do to help keep your home clean and fresh, while giving you more time to enjoy fun activities with friends and neighbors.

Dining

Our Dining Services team are very proud to serve delicious meal options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Center Dining Venue offers full-service dining. A hearty breakfast is served seven days a week from 8:00–9:30am. A wide variety of lunch and dinner meal options are available from 11:30–5:30 Monday–Saturday and Sundays from 11-3.

Our Grand Dining Venue is currently being reinvented with the help of a resident-led focus group. At present, we’re offering casual dining options like “Grab & Go” items, Daily Dine-in options from 11-2, and fun weekly specials like “Taco Tuesdays.”

If you’re not feeling well or prefer a quiet meal at home, delivery and to-go meal options are also available. If you have mobility challenges, we offer the convenience of a shuttle service to our dining rooms four times each day.

View our Dining Services page for more information as well as the current menu options.

Transportation

Driving in a busy metropolitan area like ours can be stressful -- especially when dealing with things like vision issues or slowed reactions. If you ever feel uncomfortable driving but don’t want to burden family or friends with rides to the doctor’s office or other appointments, we are here to help.

Our group transportation offers ADA compliant, 12-seat buses that take residents to common destinations like the bank or the post office, grocery stores, pharmacies, shopping centers and fun places like restaurants and theaters. We also have vans for individual medical appointments within our large surrounding boundaries.

When you take advantage of our transportation services, it lets family visits be about spending quality time instead of getting to appointments.

Check out our transportation guide for full information.

Exercise & wellness programs

Our Senior Wellness program is led by our partner, Functional Pathways. The full-time Wellness Coordinator is committed to helping you live your best life by feeling better, reducing falls and remaining independent as long as possible. Group wellness opportunities include classes like Enhanced Mobility, Breath & Meditation, Mindful Movement, Chair Yoga, Fitness with Friends, Wii Bowling and even Field Trips.

Individual support is offered as well, starting with balance and gait measurements to identify muscle groups that may be weak. Exercises that help strengthen these areas to reduce the risk of falling are recommended, taught and encouraged.

Senior activities & clubs

Staying busy, having fun and socialization are extremely beneficial for both your mental and physical health. To that end, we are proud to provide a wide variety of engaging activities and social opportunities to enjoy each and every week. Some of our more popular clubs include choir, gardening, book club, model airplanes and wood shop. Activities include themed dinner parties with live music, restaurant and theater outings, games (Bingo, Pokeno, etc.), Funny Money auctions, trivia, arts & crafts, educational guest speakers, and much more.

Aligning with our vision (A world where all people thrive and live with purpose), we could not be more proud of our Volunteer Program. As of January 2025, we have over 120 residents volunteering throughout our community doing things like leading activities, playing piano, tending to our roses, walking dogs, reading to sight impaired, distributing notices, keeping our libraries well organized, having lunch with prospective residents, and assembling packets. These residents not only help our community but also themselves by staying active and finding purpose.

Security

Fellowship Square Historic Mesa has security staff on duty every day, 24/7, 365 days a year. Each is trained in First Aid and CPR, and all are required to wear a uniform shirt and photo identification. Criminal background and fingerprint checks are done on all staff. Included in their hiring and training is a focus on recognizing and responding with compassion to special needs of seniors.

Additional campus security measures include:

  • Security camera monitoring of common areas.
  • Entrance gates locked (except main entrance by guard station as required for emergency vehicles).
  • Security doors with deadbolt locks.
  • Easy access showers with grab bars.
  • Smoke detectors and fire alarm system, checked every three months
  • Regular evacuation drills
  • Multiple elevators (14 in fact) throughout community (stairs are not encouraged due to fall risk)

Included in your monthly rent is a personal emergency alert device. The device is intended for use when you have an emergency that requires the assistance of our security staff. Examples would be a medical emergency or if you have fallen and cannot get to the telephone. (It is important to note that the device is intended for on-campus emergencies only and summons a security officer. The device does not alert 911.)

Spiritual support

Our organization is based on Christian values. This does not mean that an individual has to be a Christian to live here or work here. In fact, we welcome all faiths.

What it does mean is that we attract kind, service-driven residents and staff which makes our community a very nice place to be!

Because a large number of our staff and residents are among the faithful, we employ a full-time Chaplain and offer a variety of worship and spiritual support opportunities.

Kurt Stromberg feels honored and blessed to be the Chaplain of our community. He leads weekly Bible studies, makes visits to residents who are in the hospital, and offers grief and prayer support. He is pleased to offer blessings for your new home in our community and even offers pet blessings.

Check out our worship schedule for more information.

Friendly and highly skilled independent living staff

As a non-profit Christian organization, we not only attract nice residents, but we attract compassionate, service-oriented staff. Our staff repeatedly tell us that they have found personal reward in their work. They feel good about helping others and often develop close relationships with our residents. This fact is reflected in the care our staff provides you and supported by feedback from residents.

What is life like in a Fellowship Square independent living community in Mesa?

As one of our residents famously said, “Life is what you make of it.” Because there are so many options in our Independent Living community, she could not have been more right.

If you’re an avid walker, you might enjoy an early morning stroll around our 14 acre property followed by a hearty breakfast in our dining room. Afterwards, you could participate in a weekly Bible Study group led by our full-time Chaplain, or if you like to sing, an uplifting choir practice. Afterwards, enjoy a bit of rest after your busy morning and head home to watch your favorite television show. In the afternoon, you might head back to our community room to participate in a painting or diamond art class. Then, you can meet up with some friendly residents to enjoy a delicious meal in our dining room along with some lively conversation.

Or perhaps you’d like to sleep in and enjoy a light breakfast in your fully equipped kitchen. After you’ve walked your four-legged best friend to one of our dog park areas, you visit our fitness center for a personal assessment. With the help of our Wellness Coordinator, you develop an exercise plan which includes water aerobics, since you were once an avid swimmer and know you’ll enjoy one of our three sparkling pools. Following your meeting, you hop on our bus for a group outing to a nearby shopping center where you can pick up some necessities. After you get home and put your supplies away, you stroll over to our Volunteer office where you can learn about the many volunteer opportunities available to help you find purpose as you assist our community. Before you know it, your afternoons are often busy helping sight-impaired residents read their mail. An evening walk to the dog park is the final activity for the day to enjoy “yappy hour” visits with other dog owners before you call it a day.

The choices are varied and all yours in Independent Living at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa…but don’t wait too long. Join us while you’re still active and can enjoy the many activities and social opportunities offered here. Grasp the opportunity to make new friends who live just a minute or two from you. Seniors can and should thrive!

Our website is very comprehensive and you can find nearly anything you might want to know about our community. However, it doesn’t fully convey what it’s like to live here.

There’s a palpable feeling of warmth and community as you walk through our campus and see residents visiting with one another, or you notice a housekeeper pausing her work to cheerfully assist someone. When you hear the voices of our resident choir in the community room joyfully practicing songs for their next concert, you can’t help but smile. As you see the driver helping residents off the bus with their weekly groceries and hear them laughing with each other, or watch the water aerobics group enjoying exercise together each morning, the sense of friendship rings loud and clear.

There is no substitute for visiting in person. Come enjoy a tour, have lunch on us, and feel the Fellowship! You’ll be glad you did.

Services within each of these community living lifestyles can be customized and enhanced for individual needs and to maximize quality of life.

Do you offer subsidized housing assistance for seniors on Social Security?

We are pleased to offer the following housing assistance for residents who qualify:

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Voucher Program (aka Section 8) – Residents receiving a voucher from the City of Mesa (or any other city because Mesa will transfer) must present it to us in order to receive rental assistance. Once approved, we typically get 30% of your adjusted gross income from HUD to apply to your rent. The remainder of our rate will be your responsibility on a services lease.

Industrial Development Authority (IDA) Discount Program – Available for up to 83 units in our community. Residents need to comply with current year income limits to receive a 5% rent credit.

FHLB (Federal Home Loan Bank Program) Affordable Housing Program Grant

We have a total of 62 units in these buildings.

  • A minimum of 40 units are income restricted – meaning that residents’ income must fall at or below 50% of the annual median income.
  • If your income qualifies, the discount is $100 off a first-floor apartment or $200 off a second-floor apartment in buildings T, W, X and Y only.

Is there an age restriction at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa?

Yes, 62 and up. If someone younger is on disability, appropriate for independent living and would benefit from our services, they would be approved.

Can I bring my pet?

Yes. We are pet friendly and welcome small dogs and cats under 30 lbs. (Size exception for service dogs.) Pets must be vaccinated, licensed and friendly. We have four dog parks throughout the community. Pets must not relieve themselves in common areas and if an accident occurs, the resident must clean it up immediately or they may be fined.

Can I bring personal belongings and furniture with me?

Absolutely. Independent Living apartments are unfurnished so you can bring your treasured belongings with you. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, stove/oven and microwave.

Can I visit and spend a trial period at a Historic Mesa independent living community?

It is certainly possible for those who income qualify, and it’s based on our furnished guest unit availability. Please discuss with a Leasing Consultant.

How are meals and dietary needs handled?

Our Dining Services team is very proud to serve delicious meal options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Center Dining Venue offers full-service dining. A hearty breakfast is served seven days a week. A wide variety of lunch and dinner meal options are available from 11:30–5:30 Monday–Saturday and Sundays from 11-3.

While we do not offer a gluten-free or diabetic menu, there are enough options on our menus that someone facing those challenges will be able to find a meal that meets their needs each day.

View our Dining Services page for more information as well as the current menu options.

Is there an emergency response system?

Included in your monthly rent is a personal emergency alert device. The device is intended for use when you have an emergency that requires the assistance of our security staff. Examples would be a medical emergency or if you have fallen and cannot get to the telephone. (It is important to note that the device is intended for on-campus emergencies only and summons a security officer. The device does not alert 911.) Because personal emergency alert devices only work when you are wearing them, we have additional safety measures in place.

One is a tub alert button which is located on the wall, down low, next to the tub/shower in a high frequency fall location. It functions the same way as the personal emergency alert. The only difference will be in the response when the security guard enters with eyes averted and kindly covers you with a towel if needed.

The other is our Daily Check In system. We ask each resident to push the check in button in their apartment between 4am and 10am each day. At 10am, we run a report that tells us which apartments have not checked in. We will then check our hospital and vacation logs to see if the resident is scheduled to be off campus. Then we call each apartment remaining on the list to verify that everyone is well. These calls are usually completed by 2pm. At this point, the list is turned over to the Security officer who conducts a physical search to locate any resident who hasn’t checked in. This search is typically completed before 6 pm. The process happens 365 days a year and we account for every single resident.

Can I have visitors or overnight guests?

Indeed, you can. We have furnished guest apartments available for $100 per night. You’re also allowed to have guests stay in your apartment for periods of time. Houseguests are normally limited to one week per three-month period unless a longer stay is approved by the Executive Director.

Are there opportunities for community involvement?

Opportunities galore!
