Levels of Senior Care, Explained

"Senior Living" and "Retirement Living" are broad, synonymous terms used to describe a range of communities that provide senior living services. Both phrases are frequently used by communities offering several levels of senior living services in one location. For example, at Fellowship Square Surprise, we provide Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, all on one campus.

On this page, we will dive into the full range of senior living options and levels of care. We will explore the differences between each, as well as the services provided, and admission requirements. Simply click on a topic to reveal more details.

Independent Living is the best option for seniors who want to let go of the household chores of living in a single-family home or a condo. They want to enjoy their independence, and they are looking for a sense of security and the peace of mind that comes from knowing that supportive services are available just outside their door.

In Independent Living, monthly rent covers a wide range of services and amenities, such as a certain number of meals per month, scheduled transportation, security, and emergency call systems, housekeeping services, maintenance, and more.

There are very few requirements for Independent Living, with an age requirement being the most common.

Independent Living residents are typically able to perform daily living activities with minimal to no assistance. However, should they need a little extra help, in-home care is a valuable tool to help residents live safely in their Independent Living apartment and maintain their health and wellness.

At Fellowship Square, residents must be 62 or older. Occasionally, one spouse or partner might be younger than 62, in which case they are both permitted to live in the apartment together for as long as the older person is a resident. Supportive Services and Home Health Care

Sometimes referred to as "in-home care" or "home care," Home Health and Supportive Services provide the extra support someone may need to maintain their independence and live safely in their apartment. Home Health Services can be provided as needed or monthly and for brief or extended periods. Supportive Services are private pay and are performed by licensed CNAs and certified caregivers.

Skilled Home Health services or "skilled services" can also be provided in the resident's apartment but must be done by an RN or LPN. Medicare and many other insurance plans will cover skilled services. To qualify for coverage, patients must have a doctor's order and a medical necessity for skilled care.

At a certain point, seniors may need more assistance than what can be provided in Independent Living. In such cases, Assisted Living becomes ideal for seniors who need increased support in their day-to-day lives but do not require 24-hour care in a skilled nursing facility.

Assisted Living offers an extensive set of services, including three meals a day plus snacks, 24-hour caregiver assistance, weekly housekeeping, laundry, and more. Caregivers provide extra help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and grooming, incontinence management, medication management, and more.

The degrees of care provided in Assisted Living are divided into three levels: Supervisory Care, Personal Care, and Direct Care

Assisted Living facilities are licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services and can be authorized to provide one, two, or all three levels of Assisted Living care. The Oasis at Fellowship Square Surprise is licensed to provide all three.

Before admission, the resident will complete a health assessment with the Assisted Living Director to determine which level of care best fits the resident's needs.

Once the appropriate level of care is determined, the care plan is reviewed with the resident and the resident's representative upon admission.

You can visit our Assisted Living Services & Prices page for complete information on prices and the services we provide at The Oasis.

Memory Care is appropriate for those in the intermediate to advanced stages of dementia. They may be unable to recognize danger, summon assistance on their own, or make fundamental care decisions for themselves.

If wandering behaviors become a concern, secure Memory Care units deliver an added layer of security.

In Memory Care, certified caregivers provide substantial assistance with daily activities such as ambulation, selecting menu items in the dining room, bathing, toileting, dressing, and medication management.

We'd like to encourage you to visit our Assisted Living with Memory Care page for complete details on our approach to care and review prices and services.
