Resources for Low-Income Seniors
This list of resources was inspired by a group of students in a local after-school program who were learning about health programs for seniors.
The students were encouraged to do more research online and found several resources for low-income seniors. When their teacher reached out to us with the results, we were inspired to create a new page based on some of their findings.
Below, you will find a brief description of each program or agency, with a link directly to their site for more information.

To qualify for these food assistance programs, participants must be 60 years of age or older and meet certain income requirements.
Arizona Farmers Market Nutrition Program
Providing income-eligible Arizona Seniors with fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers' markets and farm stands.
Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) for Seniors
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of low-income persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods.
Through the AZ Department of Economic Security (DES)
State Health Insurance Assistance Program
The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a free health benefits counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries.
SHIP is an independent program not affiliated with any insurance company. The program provides seniors, their families, and caregivers with education and counseling regarding Medicare benefits, to enable seniors and their families to make informed decisions regarding their care and health benefits.
Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)
The Senior Medicare Patrol’s (SMP) mission is to empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education.
Maricopa County provides information on energy assistance programs available to seniors, to help pay utility bills, improve energy efficiency and lower costs. Programs are available through APS, Maricopa County Utility Assistance, SRP, and Southwest Gas.
Area Agencies on Aging
Area Agencies on Aging provide home and community-based services for seniors over the age of 60. Services such as meal delivery for homebound seniors, and other programs to help improve seniors' quality of life.
They can also provide objective information about Medicare and other health plan benefits. Area Agencies on Aging and the Department of Economic Security (DES) work together to provide these programs to seniors.
